Neil Broom will be missing but Michael Rippon may make an early return for Otago on Saturday.

The Volts will be without Broom for the next two twenty20 fixtures. Otago’s premier batsman is in the Black Caps team for the final two ODIs against the West Indies.

While his absence will be felt, the Volts look set to welcome back Rippon from injury.

The left-arm legspinner fractured a bone in his right hand in a one-day match on December 10. He was expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks but assistant coach Anton Roux said Rippon was being considered for the Volts’ twenty20 match against Northern Districts in Hamilton on Saturday.

If he is ruled fit, he may end up carrying the drinks, with Broom’s absence creating an opportunity for all-rounder Shawn Hicks.

Hicks, who was named 12th man for the abandoned match against Wellington, is likely to fill the spot in the top order.

The 22-year-old impressed with 83 not out to help guide Otago to a six-wicket win against Wellington in a one-day match at the University Oval earlier this month.

Otago has had two days off but will resume training this morning with an intrasquad game.

Wellington leads the Super Smash with six points from two rounds and will host Northern Districts at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, while second-placed Canterbury will play Central Districts in Rangiora on Friday.

Otago is in last place with two points but the tournament is still in the early stages.

The next home game for the Volts is against Canterbury at Molyneux Park on Boxing Day.

Otago seamer Jacob Duffy is the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with five wickets, while Jesse Ryder is the leading scorer with 138 runs.
