John McGlashan College will contest the finals of the New Zealand Cricket Cup in Palmerston North in late November.

It is the first time the school has reached the national finals of the years 7 to 8 cricket tournament, coach Andrew Hore said.

The team beat St Peter's College in the Otago-Southland regional semifinals and dispatched a team from Queenstown in the final.

At the South Island finals, McGlashan won two of its three games to qualify for the nationals.

Medbury School, the other South Island qualifier, proved too strong, winning by 54 runs.

But a fine innings of 40 from Max Chu helped McGlashan beat Nelson College Preparatory School by 43 runs, and a strong performance from the bowling unit helped the school hold on for an 18-run win against Ashburton Intermediate.

The two North Island qualifiers are still to be determined.
