Australia ruthless

Australia motored to a comfortable win over a completely outgunned Bangladesh side in the Women’s T20 World Cup in England yesterday.

Bangladesh managed just 77 for eight off their 20 overs at Headingley.

Unsurprisingly, Australia cruised to victory, knocking off the runs with nine wickets and 63 balls to spare.

The Australian spinners were to the fore in their opening win of the tournament, but it was their seamers who were utterly dominant in the early stages yesterday.

Kim Garth led the way with two for 18 from four overs, Ellyse Perry added two for 14 from three, and Annabel Sutherland conceded just eight runs from her three overs.

Australian captain Sophie Molineux added some spin variety and claimed two for 14 from four overs.

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana top-scored for her side with 27 but took 47 balls to get there, and Ritu Moni managed 16 from 26 balls.

In Australia’s reply, Beth Mooney fell for 10, but that was the only wicket to fall as they polished off the runs required in the 10th over.

Georgia Voll hit six fours and a six to finish unbeaten on 45 (32 balls), and Perry was 19 not out from 15 balls.

India posted their highest T20 World Cup total as they beat the Netherlands by 95 runs yesterday.

Smriti Manhana made her second consecutive half-century, top-scoring with 74 (47 balls), and got support from Shafali Verma (55 from 38 balls) to guide India to 209 for five.

Verma then took three for 20 with the ball and Sree Charani four for 19 as the Dutch were dismissed for 114 in the 18th over.

In the other game yesterday, South Africa beat Pakistan by two wickets with 19 balls remaining.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana blasted 55 not out (38 balls) to help her side recover from a dreadful start and post 126 for nine.

Annerie Dercksen (52 from 35 balls) then played the starring role as South Africa reached 127 for eight.
