Rain ruined the opening day of premier grade cricket.

All three games were abandoned but there was some joy for University-Grange.

It posted 273 for seven against Taieri at Brooklands on Saturday before the game was abandoned.

Jacob Cumming, son of former Black Cap Craig Cumming, cracked 110 from 156 balls and featured in a 142-run stand for the first wicket with Xavier Chisholm (48).

They are a promising pair and that partnership will fill the club with hope it can be a lot more competitive than it has been in the past two seasons.

Player-coach Muhammad Jawad whacked 33 from 31 to keep the momentum going, and Dhvanil Gandhi played a nice cameo. He swatted 22 not out from 14 balls.

Left-arm spinner Ben Lockrose was the pick of the Taieri bowlers with one for 41 from 10 overs.

At Tonga Park No2, defending champion North East Valley was restricted to 179 for nine from its 50 overs.

The Kindley brothers, Will (39) and Hunter (43), made valuable contributions and Corey Perrett top-scored with 47.

Taine Bayly picked up four wickets for Carisbrook-Dunedin/Kaikorai and Josh Finnie did his best to smash his side to victory before the rain arrived.

He hoisted seven sixes and two fours in a whirlwind knock of 64 not out from 36 balls.

The wickets tumbled at the other end. Kyle Hastie bowed a double-wicket maiden and Otago contracted player Jarrod McKay claimed a couple of scalps as well before the game was called off.

At Memorial Park, Albion posted 212 for nine against Green Island.

Opener Josh Tasman-Jones top-scored with 49 and there were useful cameos from Tim Ford (34), Max O’Dowd (28) and Sam Wells (28).

Blair Soper and Geordie Scott nabbed two wickets apiece.

But Green Island’s chase was rained off with the side on 42 for two.

Wells grabbed both wickets.
