Puddles a thing of the past?

The grass really is greener on the other side of the fence at the University of Otago Oval at the moment.

Work on the $130,000 drainage and surface upgrade at the venue got under way early last week.

That work was meant to start earlier this year but was delayed due to Covid-19.

Further delays would have compromised the venue’s ability to provide a quality surface for the four Women’s World Cup matches which were scheduled for the city in February.

However, on Saturday the ICC made the decision to postpone the event for a year.

While frustrating, it has freed up the venue for domestic games, Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan said.

"It is disappointing that we don’t have the event. It was something we were really looking forward to," he said.

"But what it means now is it becomes a little bit simpler in terms of our logistics with respect to domestic cricket.

"With that event no longer in the picture this season, most of our fixtures, which were going to have to be played away from Dunedin, will now be able to be scheduled for the home of Otago cricket.

"And what we will be doing is playing on a really nice, brand new outfield.

"It is just going to be a completely different ground. It will look fantastic and it will drain and we won’t have the problems we’ve had in the past."

The venue has had issues with its drainage.

Coggan said it should be fit for play by the middle of December, which will mean some early games will have to be played elsewhere. But the Otago Volts were facing a season where they would not have got to play on their home venue until the middle of March.

Planning for the domestic season had been put on hold while a decision on the Women’s World Cup was pending. But now that it has been postponed there is clarity around venue availability throughout the country.

Coggan expects a draft draw should available for major associations to review in the next few days.
