Otago  mountain bikers braved the winter weather for one of their marquee events at the weekend.

The Otago cross-country and single speed championships were held at the Wakari Creek/Redwoods mountain bike trails.

A field of 37 turned out, with 19 competitors in the open categories.

In an impressive display, Tim Rush beat out talented youngster Josh Burnett to win the open men's competition.

Rush finished the six lap race in 1hr 51min 29sec, clocking the fastest time on each of the last four laps.

He was trailed by Burnett in second, who was two minutes behind.

The youngster is set to travel to Switzerland in September for the junior world championships.

Meanwhile, the women's race was won by Nina McVicar in 1hr 48min 09sec - more than six minutes ahead of second-placed Haley van Leeuwen.

The single speed championships were also held and attracted 21 competitors.

More of a fun event, the race for riders of bikes with just one gear involved competitors dressing up and having a beer or ginger beer on every lap of the four-lap race.

David Ashby-Coventry won the men's race in 43min 24sec, while van Leeuwen won the women's in 49min 51sec.
