But he remains unapologetic for scheduling which saw an equestrian event staged two days before an ASB Premiership match.
The showjumping event, which was held at the venue on Friday, left the surface in a less than ideal state for Sunday's football match.
Otago coach Richard Murray and Hawkes Bay coach Chris Greatholder were reasonably measured in their criticism but said the surface was in disappointing condition for a match of that level.
''It is the first time we've played there and it was a great experience ... but then you look at the pitch and think it is very average,'' Greatholder said.
''It is comfortably the worst pitch we've played on all season. So it was disappointing because it did not quite meet the normal standard.
''I don't know if it affected the game too much, to be honest, but it turned into a scrappy affair.''
Teams are required to file a report to Football New Zealand after every match and Greatholder said his comments were that the playing surface needed to improve.
Murray said the surface was safe but noted there were ''big chunks'' missing.
''Let's just say it was noticeable that there had been some animals running around on it,'' Murray said.
''It didn't have much of an impact on the game but, well, the stadium is there for the community, isn't it.''
Both coaches agreed the state of the pitch had no bearing on the injury to Otago's experienced striker Aaron Burgess. He broke his tibia three minutes into the game when a tackle went wrong.
Huddy accepted criticism the pitch was below par but said the venue was committed to holding as many events as possible.
''At the end of the day we are a multipurpose venue which is trying to do our best for many sporting codes and there is always going to be a crossover,'' Huddy said.
''It is there to be used and we will continue to do our best to put a decent paddock out there each week.''
As for whether there should have been a longer gap between the equestrian event and the football match, Huddy said Ride the Rhythm had been booked ''well before'' the ASB Premiership schedule came out and Otago United was well aware the event was on.
''We're not a one track venue so we are always going to try and push the boundaries to make sure all these users get a crack at it.''
