Stankovic blasted an outstanding half-field volley, connecting with a clearing header by Schalke goalie Manuel Neuer with a shot that travelled almost 50m back over Neuer, who was caught outside his box.
Schalke had the final say, however, coming back to shock the defending Champions League champions with a 5-2 away win.
In the other game, Real Madrid thrashed Tottenham 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium courtesy of a double from Emmanuel Adebayor and late goals by Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo.
