Player Ally Ward ducks away from Karen Sinclair, watched by Mel Ward, playing ‘‘Walking Netball'' at the Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha yesterday.

Held twice a week at the recreation centre, the walking sport is a modern iteration of traditional netball, played at a slower pace.

Centre manager Penny Batchelor said there had been a good turnout to the new venture so far.

She had first seen the game being played in England and had the idea to bring it home. Assistant manager Rachel Lean said taking it slower and walking the sport reduced the physical impact, so more people could play.

The walking sport was about having fun and getting involved.

‘‘You don't have to have played netball before,'' she said.

She wanted to keep the sport going for a few more weeks, but might extend the timeframe if more people became interested.

Ms Lean encouraged anyone to join in.

‘‘Anyone is welcome; men, women and children.''

Walking netball is held every Tuesday at 6.30pm and every Wednesday from 12.15pm at the sport and recreation centre in Balclutha.
