Netball: Game plan simplicity but executing it tricky

The game plan is always the same for sides which come up against the Magic - stop Irene van Dyk getting the ball.

Easier said than done but for the Steel it is as pertinent as ever. The sides meet in Tauranga this afternoon and the sharpshooter looms as the biggest threat in a side which boasts eight past or present Silver Ferns.

The South African-born 1.9m sniper shot the perfect game in both matches against the Steel last year, and was the leading shooter in the inaugural ANZ Championship with 529 successful attempts at goals from 570 attempts (92.8%).

Despite van Dyk, the Steel managed to upset the Magic 47-43 in round 13 to avenge its earlier 56-47 loss.

The secret to that win was some fantastic defence on the fringe of the circle which stopped the ball getting through to van Dyk. Katrina Grant made some telling touches and the defence in the midcourt was superb. The victory has probably provided the blueprint for today's game plan.

Steel coach Robyn Broughton has plenty of options on defence if plan A starts to unravel. Megan Hutton and Sheryl Scanlan started the game against the Pulse at goal keep and goal defence respectively.

But both Grant and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit made an impact when they came on, and Erika Burgess had a solid game at wing defence.

The Steel will not be totally defence-oriented, with the attack end more than capable of winning the match.

Goal shoot Daneka Wipiiti performed well when the sides last met and, with Donna Wilkins and Adine Wilson (wing attack) joining the campaign this season, the Steel's attack is experienced.

Wilkins, who had a baby late last year and then broke her wrist in a pre-season game, made a speedy recovery from injury to be ready in time for the Steel's opening match against the Central Pulse in Invercargill last week.

The dual netball and basketball international had some nice touches in the 55-46 win and her fitness benefited from the match play.

"It was really good to get out there and have the full 60 minutes and get such a physical game," Wilkins said.

"I wouldn't say I was that happy with my own performance. But I guess you can't expect a miracle after returning from having a baby and getting my arm out of plaster."

The Magic has strengthened its defence this season, signing Silver Fern Leana de Bruin. In the midcourt it has lost Amigene Metcalfe but picked up Frances Solia from the Pulse. Former Steel and Silver Fern shooter Jess Tuki has also joined the Magic.

"They are going to be really tough; they've got a lot of Silver Ferns. But all the pressure is on them, which is nice, and on our day we can upset some of these top teams."

As for her opposition shooter: "You can't just focus on Irene like you used to be able to do because Maria [Tutaia] will step up.

"We've got some tricks up our sleeve which we've worked on and will try a few different things."

The Magic will go into the match as favourite having won an impressive 89% of its home games, whereas the Steel has an away winning percentage of 33%.
