Netball: New league lets teams compare

Twelve teams in the South will test themselves against the unknown tomorrow.

Netball South is launching a zone-wide league in Balclutha, which pits 12 teams from across the zone against each other.

It will provide clubs with a rare opportunity to gauge themselves against clubs from other centres.

Most of the 10 centres in the South zone are represented among the 12 teams, which will be split into four pools of three.

Dunedin guns Southern and Phys Ed highlight pools B and C, while teams from Oamaru, Gore, Queenstown, Invercargill, Alexandra and Winton are also included.

Upper Clutha had originally entered a team but pulled out and has been replaced by an invitational side.

Netball South community netball manager Rosie De Goldi said there was plenty of excitement about the new tournament, which was capped at 12 teams, due to the one-day window.

All teams will play four games, with each game reduced to eight-minute quarters.

The winner of each pool will advance to the semifinals, while the rest of the teams will fight it out for the middle and lower spots.

''We have got two top teams from Dunedin - they will be the teams to beat,'' De Goldi said.

''But the Gore and Invercargill teams are strong, so it will be good to see where everybody fits in and matches up.''

The tournament will be held annually but it is not yet known whether the time and place will change from year to year.

''We will just look at where it will be the best fit in the calendar,'' De Goldi said.

''We will get some feedback from the players and the coaches and see what people think.''

The first game gets under way at the Cross Recreation Centre at 10am tomorrow. The final is scheduled for 3pm.
