Strong start by Dunedin United

Dunedin United made a strong start to their opening day at the New Zealand Open Championships in Christchurch yesterday.

Dunedin United, comprising players from Dunedin, Central and Canterbury, opened with a big 64-38 win against South Canterbury in the morning.

They then had another strong 66-26 win against Rotorua in the afternoon,

Dunedin will meet Counties Manukau, who looked strong through the opening day, in their opening game this morning and then play Kerikeri this afternoon.

Counties thumped Rotorua 70-21 and Kerikeri 68-28 in their first games of the tournament.

Invercargill had a tough game first up, losing 52-25 to Waitakere. They then lost 58-38 to Manawatu Green who opened their campaign by pipping defending champions Hamilton City 40-39.

Hamilton City also notched a win against Christchurch Pango 57-38.

North Harbour look like ones to watch as well after beating Taranaki 61-33 and North Canterbury 53-28.

Auckland thumped Selwyn Invitational 80-19 and were later edged 40-39 by Wellington.

Invercargill meet Hamilton City and Christchurch Pango today.
