Croquet: NZ out to end 24-year drought

New Zealand will be attempting to win the MacRobertson Shield, the top teams event in world croquet, for the fourth time in England this month.

The championship is held every three or four years between teams from Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and the United States.

Great Britain is the holder.

New Zealand's last win was in the United Kingdom in 1986.

Since then it has been dominated by Great Britain which has won the title six times in a row.

New Zealand finished fourth in the last two MacRobertson Shields, and is determined to improve its placing this timeIt is a round-robin tournament over 12 singles and 9 doubles matches.

The MacRobertson Shield began in 1925 between England and Australia.

The event was held irregularly over the next few years and New Zealand played for the first time in 1930.

Croquet has grown significantly as a world sport in the last 20 years, aided by the establishment of the World Croquet Federation in 1986.

The event starts on August 10 and continues until August 22 at Bowdon, Heaton Park, Nottingham, Roehampton and Surbiton, in England.
