It does appeal to the Meek family, though.
Father-son combination Chris and Dane seem to like the idea of exercising vigorously while holding their breath.
It is tough, and they excel at it.
Dane (36) has just returned from Kuala Lumpur with a gold medal.
He captained the New Zealand men’s masters team and they won their category at the inaugural Asia-Oceania intercontinental championships.
It was a qualifying event for the world championships in Paris in 2027, and they beat Australia 4-1 in the final.
Chris (61) was poolside for the victory. He was one of four New Zealand referees selected for the tournament and has been a source of inspiration for Dane, who took up the sport as a 10-year-old, having watched his dad play.
"Dad’s been involved for decades... so to win gold with him right there was special," Dane said.
Chris is a former New Zealand masters player and is still an active competitor.
The two have played alongside each other in recent years, and they might soon be joined by two other Meeks.
Dane’s sons Nate (9) and Zach (6) have been dipping their toes in the (under)water.
They are learning the sport at Moana Pool on Sundays.
Dane, a project manager for Isaac Construction, said the hope was they would all get to play together at some stage.
"That’s our goal, and probably, yeah, another three years’ time that we’ll have all three generations playing at a New Zealand tournament," he said.
It is a sport you can play all year round, which appeals. But he also loves the collegiality of it.
"Some of your best mates are at the end of the country and you get to catch up with them.
"And then once you start going to international events, you become mates with people from all over the world.
"It is like a family or a community, which is one of the cool things about it."
All four New Zealand teams at the Kuala Lumpur event did well.
The elite men and elite women also nabbed gold, while the women’s masters won silver.
Otago was well represented with Simon Walker (masters men), Maia Teusse and Jade Stapleton (elite women) flying the flag for Dunedin at the event.
