
The majority of New Zealand’s premier athletes have confirmed their intent to compete at the Caledonian next week.
They will compete across two bumper days at the Caledonian being dubbed "Finals Friday" and "Super Saturday" on March 7 and 8.
Maddi Wesche, who collected silver in the shot put in Paris, will spearhead the women’s shot put field on Friday.
World under-20 men’s triple jump champion Ethan Olivier, Olympic javelin thrower Tori Moorby (nee Peeters) and Olympic discuss thrower Connor Bell will be in action on Friday.
There will also be the 800m finals, 3000m steeplechase, 4x100m relay finals and under-20 5000m finals during that session.
Saturday is the other day to excite local athletics fans.
Kerr, who was named Halberg sportsman of the year last week, will be flying in the high jump, and Anna Grimaldi, who won the Halberg for para athlete of the year, will get the rare chance to race the 200m in a major meet at her home track.
Olympic shot put duo Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill will square off for national bragging rights, Gill having won the title the past couple of years.
Sprint sensation Zoe Hobbs will race in the 100m, and Tiian Whelpton, who is fast making a name for himself as New Zealand’s dominant men’s sprinter, will compete in the men’s 100m.
Olympians Eliza McCartney and Livi McTaggart will both be vying for the national pole vault title, and Lauren Bruce is scheduled for the hammer throw.
Sam Tanner will compete in the 1500m and Lex Revell-Lewis will continue his quest to break the national men’s 400m record.
Several of Otago’s top athletes will also be in action across the four days from March 6 to 9.
