''It was a tough season last season. We didn't have the best horses. Hopefully this season is better - we have some nice horses ... The facilities are great here. We're back on the beach which is awesome, we have a track here if we need it and the horses are out in paddocks instead of being locked up all the time.
THIS SEASON
''At the moment, there's close to 25. There's about six gallopers and the rest are pacers and trotters. I've got two more gallopers arriving [today], so it will get a bit bigger but I wouldn't want to get over 30, especially over summer. And in winter, I want to cut right down because it was just too hard this year''.
Hoffman has one staff member helping in the morning, and Brenna Cook helps out fulltime.
DEPARTURES
Harness: New Years Jay left Hoffman late last season to be trained in the North Island by Barry Purdon at Clevedon, while Best Of The Bunch is off to Nora Bishop at Tomahawk.
3YR-OLDS TO WATCH
Harness: Keep It Simple - a 3yr-old American Ideal half-sister to Better To Be Bad and Simply Susational.
''She qualified a couple of weeks ago but pulled up crook, so she did well to qualify. She's in the paddock for another week, then we'll take her to another trial and race her around Christmas time. She's not very big, but she's a lovely pacer and has the right attitude.''
OTHERS TO WATCH
Harness: King Denny is back jogging after a setback when he raced at Addington on August 19.
''He jumped on his heel during the race, and it just burst out. We were thinking the worst - a pedal bone, probably - but it as great to see all the puss come out.''
A knee had also been treated, but the smart trotter seemed to be coming right.
''He was sound today and we'll just keep going and go back to the trials before we go back to the races.''
Quick Nick (1 win for Alister Black) has been working well.
''He was a bit of a handful to start with but he's not far away [from] going to the workouts and trials. Delightful Jay is due to start fast work and I'm quite excited to get Break Dance back. Around Christmas time in those fillies and mares miles, she should do a really good job.''
Thoroughbred: Nordea Wee Thing is coming back after pulling up very sore at Omakau in the summer. Babilloni will line up ''somewhere in the next couple of weeks'' and Hoffman is also looking forward to Hardy's Revenge returning to racing.
