Lazarus, Heaven Rocks to clash in workout

Superstar pacers Lazarus and Heaven Rocks will make their first public appearances of the new season at today's Rangiora workouts.

The freakishly talented Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained horses will race each other in a two-horse 2000m standing start heat.

Lazarus comes into today's workout after winning the Taylor Mile and New Zealand Messenger Championship double at Alexandra Park in April.

The Otago-bred star spelled in the Waikato before heading south to begin his New Zealand Cup preparation at the All Stars stable.

Heaven Rocks returns to the track after a shorter break, on the back of his stunning Harness Jewels run at Ashburton.

Today could potentially feature an improved version of the often wayward, but highly talented pacer.

Heaven Rocks had shown improved manners and had been training exceptionally in his recent work, Mosgiel part-owner Phil Creighton said.

The pair's stablemate, Dream About Me, heads the field for Sunday's Hannon Memorial.

The 5yr-old, who was third in the New Brighton Cup at the weekend will again clash with runner-up Titan-Banner, who is among the mare's 10 rivals.

Today's Rangiora workouts will also feature the return of forgotten trotter Stent.

The former trotter of the year has not raced December 2015 because of a suspensory ligament injury.
