Racing: First success for trainer

Shane Nuttall had his first win as a trainer when Rozelski won the $25,000 race for 2yr-old fillies at Invercargill on Saturday.

The Weedons-based Nuttall (32), who is employed at a Christchurch meat processing plant, renewed his licence to train this season after a break of four years. He also held a licence in the 2002-03 season.

He has only had horses to the races 14 times. Rozelski is the only horse he has in work and she was having her third start.

Nuttall began work with trainer Mark Smolenski when he left school and had stints with Barry Purdon and Malcolm Shinn.

Nuttall races Rozelski (Bettor's Delight-Highview Hazel) with breeders Bob and Leonne Smolenski, of Templeton.

Rozelski is the second foal of Highview Hazel (Holmes Hanover-Smooth Mystery), who won two races for the Smolenskis when trained by David and Catherine Butt. Her first foal, Aim Aloof, won two races before being sold to Australia.

Rozelski was offered at the 2011 premier yearling sale and bought back for $14,000. She is eligible for a Sales series race on April 27.

• A decision to send Its Oscar to Motukarara trainer Murray Edmonds paid off when he won the $9000 race for 2yr-old trotters at Methven yesterday.

Its Oscar is owned by Mosgiel trainer Darryn Simpson, his partner Kylie Smail, and Dennis O'Connell, of Seacliff. He was having his third start.

Simpson was given a share in Its Oscar by O'Connell when the colt was a foal. Its Oscar (Sundon-Pleasant Whiz) had been bred by his mother, Nora O'Connell, and sister Colleen Negus.

"He [Its Oscar] seemed special when I had him in work and we decided to send him to Murray for more experience," Simpson said.

Its Oscar is the first foal of Pleasant Whiz, a Gee Whiz mare who qualified as a trotter.

She foaled a colt to Sundon this season and is back in foal to that sire.

Maddison Renee was retired out of the Simpson stable after her unplaced run at Invercargill on Saturday.

"She won five races and took a mile record of 1.56.8. We have tried to get her in foal and she will have the chance to let down properly before the next breeding season," Simpson said.

San Rafaella, who was scratched on Saturday, has also been retired from racing.

• Te Anau owner Barry Taylor figured in the ownership of winners Lake View and Hokuri Handrail at Invercargill on Saturday. He races Lake View with his father, Jim. He is in the Wazzanme syndicate who race Hokuri Handrail. Both horses are trained by Murray Brown.

Hokuri Handrail has now won five races. Lake View has won his last four. The Taylors bred Lake View (Elsu-Flit By).

• Trainer Wayne Adams and stable driver Adam Sanderson combined to win with Racy Lacy, Donthavtime and Shezaball.

Sanderson has driven 29 winners this season.

Jaccka Justy was found to have a high respiration rate after finishing second last in race 5. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of Jaccka Justy. He will have blood tests and an endoscopy to determine his condition.

• Torias Secret took a best mile time of 1.52.3 when she won at Menangle on Saturday. It was her ninth win since the daughter of Mach Three and Flyin Score was sent to the New South Wales stable of Luke McCarthy in September by Leeston owner Vicki Cowan.

Erle Dale won in 1.51.8, his 13th win for Makarewa owner Bill Keeler. He has the Western Hanover-Cath Hanover 4yr-old gelding in the stable of Paul Fitzpatrick.

Lleyton H, who transferred to Johnny Tapp last Monday from Pukekohe trainer Derek Balle, won on Saturday night.
