Racing: Gavel down on career

Paul Davies has retired as an auctioneer of standardbreds after 40 years on the job.

"I will continue to be involved with standardbreds, buying and selling through my own company," the Christchurch-based Davies said.

Born and schooled in Dunedin, Davies began work as a trainee stock agent with the National Mortgage Agency and Company there in 1965.

"National Mortgage conducted the National yearling sales for standardbreds in Dunedin that year in conjunction with the Interdominion.

"I heard Peter Kelly in action as an auctioneer and decided then that was what I wanted to do," Davies said.

He shifted to Christchurch in 1970 and became the standardbred representative for National Mortgage-Wright Stephenson.

He held that position until 1986 when the division was taken over by National Bloodstock Corporation.

He subsequently contracted to Pyne Gould Guiness-Wrightson as an auctioneer. The premier sale in Christchurch last month bought the curtain down on his auctioneering.

Davies recently negotiated the sale of Slash An Burn to clients of the Victoria stable of Geoff Webster.

Slash N Burn won eight races for Russell Nieper, of Dunedin, when trained by Jim Curtin.

Davies negotiated the sale of Zion to the Webster stable in May last year after the Red River Hanover gelding had won two races from the Curtin stable.

Zion (renamed Mister Zion) won the South Australian Cup at Globe Derby Park in January.

Nieper has bought Franco Emirate and the 3yr-old has been transferred to Curtin from Steven McRae.

The Christian Cullen gelding won at Gore in December in his only start.

Liquidity, winner of two races from the Leo O'Reilly stable, has joined Bruce Negus at Waikouaiti.

The good form of Cracker Black is the sequel to his Christchurch owners following the advice of reinsman Craig Thornley.

The 3yr-old, owned by Robbie Rowland and Gerard Lagan, had his third win in five starts at Addington on Friday night.

Cracker Black has been placed in his other two starts.

Rowland, who has a training licence, produced Cracker Black to finish third in a trial at Addington last July when driven by Thornley.

"Craig said he was a pretty smart horse and advised us to put him in a stable with more horses," Rowland said.

Cracker Black was transferred to McRae at Spreydon Lodge, Halswell, and qualified in 2.00.7 for a mile at Ashburton a week later.

Cracker Black ran third in his lone start at 2.

He was then spelled and won fresh up at Addington in December.

Cracker Black is a colt by Courage Under Fire from Aviatric, a Save Fuel mare who has left the winners Tellthebanker and Times Are Good.

Aviatric is a half-sister to Kiri Rue, winner of the 1985 Queen's Birthday Stakes at Ashburton when owned and trained by Rowland.

Lagan was in the ownership of Eastwood Schell, who won a race for 3yr-olds at Kaikoura in 1977 at his first start when trained by Lagan's brother, Michael.

Jockey Opie Bosson was suspended from next Sunday until the following Friday when he admitted a charge of careless riding at the Masterton meeting on Sunday.

Bosson is third in the premiership with 99 wins behind James McDonald (125) and Mark du Plessis (111).
