Racing: Jewels a step closer

Poppymalda will be part of a convoy of southern pacers and trotters on the road north to Ashburton for the Harness Jewels at the end of this month.

The mare's spot in the $100,000 4yr-old trotters' section of the Jewels was all but confirmed when she won the c2 and faster 2700m trot at Forbury Park last night, despite a brave bid from back-marker Jaccka Justy.

Her season earnings went past $22,500, moving her to 10th on the standings. Poppymalda's trainer, Nathan Williamson, of Ryal Bush, said she will get her chance to make her mark at the highest level.

''She'll enjoy it - she's pretty fast - but it's the opposition she might not enjoy as much.''

Indeed, Poppymalda's rivals are likely to include the rising stars Mum's Pride, King Denny and Belle's Son but her recent form suggests she should not be out of place.

Williamson said her failures at Ascot Park on April 12 and Winton on April 19 were not entirely her fault.

''I'm making excuses for her now, but the first start there was a hail shower round at the start.

''When the tape went, she got a fright. She's one where if she gallops at the start, she won't settle until everything's past her.

''The second start . . . we were walking around at the start for about 10 minutes and she began that fast she forgot what to do with her feet.''

Manners are not a concern for Time For Success.

Following a path that worked with Davey's Gift, West Melton trainer Michael Ward sent Time For Success to Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson last month.

It paid off with a maiden trot win last night.

Driver Matthew Williamson said manners were always going to get the Great Success mare close to a maiden win.

''She's so good-mannered and a beautifully gaited horse that you're doing something wrong if she gallops. She's beautiful to drive. She is one-paced a bit - she just keeps going and she just kept going better than the rest tonight.

''They thought there was only one [win] in her, but she probably went near enough tonight to have one go at the one-win horses.''

• Alan Edge and Bernie Ryan won a claiming ballot for Scanreco Bay, who ran fourth in the claiming mobile pace.

Scanreco Bay was entered for a price of $3000 and will be trained by Michael House.
