Racing: Name could prove apt

Speed may feature in Live At Speed's name, and her trainer, Robbie Holmes, hopes he finds a bit of that in the mare at Addington tonight.

The 4yr-old daughter of Live Or Die has just one raceday start to her name, with a sixth at Addington last Friday proving she is capable of footing it at the Christchurch venue.

Her sixth, after working slowly to the lead and handing up, was against the style of racing Holmes thinks suits her best.

''I think she's more of a sit-sprinter,'' Holmes said.

''I've got a bit of time for her. She's probably best coming off someone else's back.''

Live At Speed has plenty of pace in her pedigree, tracing back to her grand dam Bionic Chance, the winner of 18 races including the 1986 2yr-old sires' stakes championship before carrying her form through to the 1988 standardbred breeders' stakes.

''She's quite a nice filly but she's still learning the game a little bit.''

Holmes has options from Live At Speed's barrier draw of three, but the choices for Fulham Flyer in a 1950m mobile pace are a bit more restricted from barrier 8.

The P-Forty-Seven mare was building into her career nicely before she blew apart at Motukarara on September 29, breaking twice before finishing 10th.

''To be honest, I can't really put it down to anything.

''Her third two starts ago was pretty good.''

A blood report from Fulham Flyer following the race prompted Holmes to give her a short break before tonight's assignment, although she was scratched from a potential start at Rangiora on October 20.

Dragon Lady's manners aren't helping Holmes with his sleeping patterns as he gives her another chance from a mobile start in a c2-c4 mobile trot.

The mare does not win out of turn, having won just once in 26 attempts, but Holmes said she should have at least won a couple more in her career if it wasn't for her poor manners.

Her attitude to standing starts has forced him into tonight's mobile event.

''She doesn't like the 10-metre tapes behind her, but in saying that, she's galloped away from a mobile before too.

''I think she's getting a bit of the Sundon coming through [from her mother's side].''

Holmes has also nominated the 6yr-old for Kaikoura on Monday in case she makes a mess of the start.

Hairy Maclary (race 8) and Albie Al (race 11) will both need a lot of luck from their draws, Holmes said.
