Two people were taken to hospital, one in a serious condition, following a crash in Waitati this morning.

The single-vehicle crash just outside Blueskin Nursery, on State Highway 1 near the Waitati turnoff, was reported to emergency services about 9.30am, police said.

A police spokesperson said the car crash into a ditch and the person inside was initially unable to get out due to the angle of the vehicle in the ditch.

By 10.05am both the driver and passenger were out of the and the road was down to one lane, the spokesperson said in an update.

Hato Hone St John said one rapid response unit and one ambulance responded to the crash.

Two people were treated at the scene, before being transported to Dunedin Hospital, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.

One was in a serious condition and the other was in a moderate condition.
