Thistle dashed over 800m in 47.47, the last 600m in 34.2 and won by two lengths from Kellie Grace.
Thistle, who has not raced since May, won over 1400m at Wingatui and Cromwell last season.
The Pegasus is over 1000m on Saturday week.
The Steven Prince-trained Thistle, ran second to Miss Benro fresh up over 1000m on the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting last year on a slow track.
Sandhill Road won a maiden heat in 47.42.
Sandhill Road was placed in the first of his two starts as a 2yr-old last season.
Smudgee, a 3yr-old Yamanin Vital-Renee filly won a heat in 47.56.
He is a stablemate of Sandhill Road with Brian and Shane Anderton.
Turffontein won a 1000m maiden heat narrowly in 59.71, the last 800m in 47.11 and 600m in 36.38.
The Johannesburg 4yr-old has finished fourth at Gore and Invercargill this month in his two starts since joining Murray Hamilton.
