One of the first requirements of being an All Black is to be humble.

So it is no surprise man of the moment Ryan Crotty is downplaying his impact on the field.

A story was doing the rounds yesterday that all games lost by the Crusaders and the All Blacks this past year were when Crotty was not playing.

When Crotty is there the victories usually come although he does play for a couple of handy sides.

But the midfield back has the Midas touch although the 28-test All Black said yesterday he was not getting too ahead of himself.

''I try not to read too much into that kind of thing. What works for me in this team is going out there and doing my job and executing my role under pressure,'' he said.

''If I can do that and help the guys around me that is great. If I can do that again this weekend then it is great.''

All Black assistant coach Ian Foster said Crotty was going from strength to strength.

''I thought his game in the weekend was outstanding. He gets labelled a Steady Eddie - he does not make many mistakes.

''But then you look at his game line carries - it is one of the highest, then his line breaks, offloads. There is a lot more to his game then he gets credit for.

''And, yes, he is a calming influence and great read defensively but he is a very significant contributor on attack in a less flambuoyant way but a very effective way.''

Crotty said the side just needed to show better execution this week and that came about from each player nailing his role.

The midfielder was looking every bit a regular over the last season and any worries over losing the likes of Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith appear to have abated.

Crotty said the game last Saturday went south as soon as the side stopped playing on both attack and defence and let Australia back into the game.

''When we do execute with the ball and without it ... we have to work hard on both sides of the ball for 80 minutes.''
