Strong win over Toko underscores Owaka resurgence

The season started with a bang and there has been plenty of close ones but Owaka finally got back into the winner's circle last Saturday.

The club is celebrating its 125th jubilee and had some major celebrations in the town over Easter weekend which culminated with a win in the opening game of the season, tipping over Clinton 20-5.

It was the first win for the side for more than two seasons but the second victory of the season remained elusive until last weekend when it had a convincing win over Toko, running out a 49-7 winner in Milton.

Owaka coach Steve Clement, who is in his second year with the team, said the side was playing with a better attitude this year and had an influx of good talent.

"We have had half a dozen close games where we have pushed other teams without quite getting it done," he said.

"Some new personnel have come in and we have tried to get a better attitude from the guys. Just changing the culture in the team. Trying to get them to play premier rugby every week.

"We have more to pick from this year and that competition for places always brings out the best in players. Guys have bought into what we have been trying to do."

Stalwart Michael Berney has been working hard all season and continues to lead the side well from second five-eighth, while up front Chris Preddie has lent his experience to the side after playing more than 100 games for the Zingari-Richmond club in Dunedin. The rest of the pack has worked hard around the park.

The side plays it final regular season game tomorrow and will be looking for a win against Lawrence in Lawrence.

In other games played tomorrow, runaway leaders Clutha will face Clutha Valley at Balclutha. Toko travels to Kaitangata to take on Crescent while Clinton will face Heriot at Heriot.
