Playoff positions at stake for most Dunedin clubs tomorrow

Will University miss out on a spot in the playoffs?

Is is possible Taieri will still win by one point even though it has a bye this weekend?

And who will get off the doughnut — Green Island or Zingari-Richmond?

Those and many more questions will be resolved during the penultimate round tomorrow.

Covid-19 cut the season short this year but there is an extended playoff series to look forward to.

Six of the nine teams make it through to the next phase.

You can go ahead and ink in Taieri. The Eels have won six of their seven games and are in pole position with 27 points.

They have a bye this week and will complete the round-robin with a home fixture against Zingari-Richmond.

While you might argue the men from Peter Johnstone Park have set the benchmark this season. They have won four games by three or fewer points.

That is perhaps as much a reflection on how tight the competition is this season as it is on Taieri’s ability.

The Eels will start as favourites to collect the win and the bonus point. But the Colours will be determined to finish strongly as well.

With just one bonus point from six games, they are out of playoff contention.

Their final will be at Montecillo tomorrow when they host Green Island.

The Grizzlies are also yet to register a win. They started the season with high expectations after having reached the semifinals last year.

They have been competitive but lacked composure at crucial times, particularly out wide.

Alhambra-Union and University have the most invested this weekend.

They appear to be the two sides battling for the final playoff berth.

University is in sixth place with 18 points from seven games. The defending champion has to travel to Watson Park for a meeting with Harbour, which has struck rich form recently.

Alhambra-Union is on 14 points and has a tough road ahead as well. It has an away game against Kaikorai tomorrow and will host Harbour in the final round.

It needs to collect a minimum of five points from those fixtures and for University to lose tomorrow in order to make the playoffs.

The match between Dunedin (20 points) and Southern (19 points) at Kettle Park is important in terms of playoff seedings.

Technically either side could still drop out of the top six but it looks unlikely.

The Magpies had a healthy 43-18 win against Zingari-Richmond last weekend, while the Sharks beat Alhambra-Union 27-18.
