The powerful Southern machine continued its domination yesterday and remains unbeaten after five rounds of the Dunedin premier competition.

Southern scored seven tries as it beat Green Island 44-6 at Miller Park.

It leads the competition with 24 points and is followed by Taieri 19, Pirates 17, Alhambra-Union and Dunedin 15, University A and Harbour 9, Kaikorai and Green Island 6 and Zingari-Richmond 0.

Taieri winger Tom Davie showed electric speed when he scored three tries to help Taieri to a 33-0 win over Alhambra-Union, moving Taieri from third to second on the championship table.

The other big mover was Dunedin which moved to fourth-equal with Alhambra-Union after downing University A 34-19.

Pirates moved to third after beating Kaikorai 31-14 with flanker Dan Crichton and Jake Maiono having solid games.

Andrew Reid kicked five goals for Taieri and shares top spot on the points table with Liam Edwards who scored 13 points for Dunedin.

The top points-scorers are Liam Edwards (Dunedin) and Andrew Reid (Taieri) 69, Peter Breen (Alhambra-Union) 50, Matt Faddes (University A 41 and Ben Miller (Pirates) 39.

The leading try-scorers are Edwards and Ben Pereira (Alhambra-Union) on six, Davie and Faddes five and Mitchell Clarke (Kaikorai) four.

Southern No 8 Andrew Stead stood out in a dominant display by his team's forward pack.

Stead complemented locks Tom Franklin and Sam Gavigan at winning clean lineout ball, and featured at both set and broken play. He scored a try on halftime and his quick thinking from a free-kick set up a try for Gavigan on fulltime.

For the first 25 minutes, Green Island held its own against the competition leader, despite carnage at scrum-time. But three quick tries, backed up by another leading into the break, turned a 6-5 deficit into a flattering 32-6 halftime lead.

Both sides rang the changes at the break.

Southern dominated territory but its only scoring came in the 57th and 80th minutes.

Despite the changes the tight five for Southern remained workmanlike throughout the match, while Robbie Smith, Tony Fenner and Blair Polwart stood out in the backs.

For Green Island, replacement halfback Stu Turner was lively and worked well behind a well-beaten pack, and lock Guy Archibald gathered valuable lineout ball.

Southern 44 (Robbie Smith, Sam Crompton, Tony Fenner, Greg Zampach, Andrew Stead, Warren Moffat, Sam Gavigan tries; Tony Fenner 3 con, 1 pen) Green Island 6 (Telusa Veainu 2 pen). Halftime: 32-6 Southern. Referee: Doug Rodgers.
