Confusing match in various ways

Confused? Yes, aren’t we all.

The Hurricanes ran away with the game against the Highlanders on Saturday night, racking up a 41-15 win after leading 10-8 at the break at the usual windy Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

It was a game in which the home side dominated the more the game went on as the Highlanders tired and lost ball at vital times.

Things are not going the Highlanders’ way this season and it is obvious to see the little man, with his dose of good fortune, is not sitting on the Highlanders’ shoulder.

Two Highlanders players left the field because of concussion, one through an act of foul play, although there is some debate how bad they were.

Centre Malakai Fekitoa, who had made a strong start to the match, was taken off after 25 minutes following a run to the line when he just failed to ground the ball.

He was not allowed back on despite appearing fine on the sideline.

Then early in the second half, rookie first five-eighth Fletcher Smith went down following a high shot from Hurricanes halfback TJ Perenara.

Smith was taken off the field and not allowed back on because of the "violence" of the collision, even though he did not seem concussed.

Yet, Perenara, who had the apology routine going straight away, was given a yellow card.

It is hard to see how he escaped with that. The hit — which was an arm thrust out — was high and sloppy, and the ball getting in the way actually somewhat saved Perenara.

A few hours later, Reds first five-eighth Quade Cooper hit a player high, like Perenara, and was given a red card.

Blues loose forward Steven Luatua was red carded in a match earlier this month for a high tackle.

Asked about the incident after the game, Highlanders coach Tony Brown said it was an interesting one.

He declined further comment.

An independent match doctor rules on concussion, sitting on the sideline, and can keep players off the field, no matter the advice from team medical staff.

The body language of the Hurricanes noticeably lifted when Perenara only received a yellow card.

The Highlanders did score a try when the All Black halfback was off the field to get up to 17-15.

But the home team got a roll on, back to 15 players, and some fine attacking play meant it scored the final 24 points and ran away with the game.

The Hurricanes put in some nice cross-field kicks which worked for them and the Highlanders defence got caught out at times.

Earlier, Fekitoa’s replacement Matt Faddes scored the first try for the Highlanders, running off a nice ball from Aaron Smith from a scrum, in the first half.

Flanker Elliot Dixon got the other try for the Highlanders.

Best for the Highlanders were No8 Luke Whitelock and hooker Liam Coltman.
