Getting details right crucial for Crusaders clash

It is all about the details for the Highlanders this week. Well, that and muscling up against a formidable Crusaders pack.

Highlanders assistant coach Mark Hammett has been pleased with the progress this season but said his side let itself down with a couple of poor decisions at crucial moments last Friday.

The franchise was desperately unlucky against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

The Highlanders dominated the physical exchanges but a late penalty allowed the Hurricanes to escape with a 25-22 win.

''You go through that game and we did play awesomely well,'' Hammett said.

''But we have to get our detail right around if a ref is calling really quick around rucks. You have to respond to that.

''We didn't get out and we put ourselves under pressure.''

Getting those sorts of details right against the Crusaders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night will be critical.

They are on a 19-game winning streak and seem unstoppable. But then, the Highlanders have an intimidating record of their own.

They have not lost at Forsyth Barr Stadium for two years and were the last side to inflict a defeat on the Crusaders.

''We are proud of that record. We are proud of playing at home and performing how we do in front of our crowd.

''Obviously the Crusaders are pretty proud of their record as well, which is going pretty strong,'' Hammett said.

''We've both got to be at our very best to keep those rolling.

''They are a very good team. I mean they are the benchmark - that's clear.

''We are excited by the challenge of coming up against the best. We won't be telling you how we are going to do that.''

Lock Pari Pari Parkinson and midfielder Thomas Umaga-Jensen are under concussion protocols and it is unclear whether they will be available this weekend.

''We've probably got a couple more days before we are real clear on where they are going to get to.''

The Crusaders will be without All Black prop Joe Moody but captain Sam Whitelock is expected to be named in the team.

Hammett does not believe Moody's absence will have much impact.

''They have a pretty good stable of props in there, haven't they? They have shown that their set piece, their lineout and scrum ... is an area they launch off.''
