The Highlanders - the most popular team in the land - have confirmed they will play all their home games in the region next year.

They will play seven games at Forsyth Barr Stadium and will also play a game in Invercargill.

There is no return to Fiji next year. The trip there in June this year was was a success for the balance sheet but less so on the field as the side lost heavily to the Chiefs in Suva.

The Highlanders said in a statement yesterday that across the five Super Rugby franchises, it had the highest average attendance.

The Highlanders averaged a crowd of 15,667 last season, with seven games played under the roof at the stadium.

Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark said it was great for the franchise and the Highlanders had come a long way since playing before sparse crowds at Carisbrook.

``We have got a fabulous venue which enables us to play fantastic rugby and people are guaranteed the conditions. That helps with what sort of game we are going to get, and the way the team plays,'' he said.

Clark said the high crowd numbers were very impressive considering it was up against franchises based in the three main cities.

It was a significant statistic given the southernmost club drew from the smallest population of all five clubs, he said.

``There is a lot of talk about Super Rugby crowds dropping yet ours is going the other way. It is pretty impressive and long may it continue.

``It's often said by the players and team management how much they appreciate our home fans and we certainly believe they are the No1 in the country and when we see statistics like this it really just confirms it for us.''

He said the total stadium experience was a key for many supporters and the franchise was continuing to work on that. The Zoo end of the ground was a unique experience in New Zealand rugby terms.

``Of course, we are extremely fortunate to have a covered stadium as it tends to produce great sporting spectacles. The games are always played in guaranteed perfect conditions, so we get to witness the full range of skills the players possess and again the stats show the ball is in play on average for more minutes per game at Forsyth Barr Stadium than other venues which is great for the fans,'' Clark said.

The first regular-season home game will be against the Reds on February 22 and it will conclude against the Waratahs on June 14 in Invercargill.

There is no international June break next season.

The squad for the 2019 season will be announced at the end of this month.
