Otago coach Cory Brown was impressed by his team’s confidence after it defeated Southland 38-12 in Queenstown yesterday in its final warm-up before the Mitre 10 Cup starts next week.

It was the two sides’ final pre-season game before they meet again in Invercargill on August 21.

A crowd of about 400 was drawn to the resort’s Events Centre on a fine, warm day and a firm ground.

That set the scene for an entertaining six-tries-to-two contest marked by enterprising back play and solid defence by the blue and golds.

Brown said the match showed encouraging signs for the season ahead.

"We’re playing with some real speed and giving the guys some space in the wider channels."

He was impressed by his team’s confidence, which was rewarded with some fine tries.

"When we got good ball we were able to move it to the width at speed.

"I thought our defence at times was excellent as well, but there are still things to work on there, close to the rucks and mauls."

The team quickly found its feet in the first quarter and was rewarded with the first try, to halfback Jono Ruru, after 15 minutes.

That set the tone for a first 40 minutes in which Otago dominated territory and possession, but it was assisted by some poor Southland decision-making and handling errors.

Otago winger Mitchell Scott scored the remaining two tries of the first half, the first set up by a burst from fullback Tony Ensor and the second after some slick interpassing.

All three first-half tries were converted by Scott Eade, giving the team a comfortable 21-0 lead.

Otago started the second half strongly with a try from a driving maul to Liam Coltman after 45 minutes and another two minutes later to flanker Dillon Hunt following a scything 25m solo effort.

The game then evened up as Southland reduced its error rate, scoring two tries to Otago’s three in the second half.

Brown said areas needing attention were the lineout and players’ ball security when going into contact.

But, overall, he was encouraged by the depth the team was developing.

"We had 26 guys out there, some of them playing for the first time at this level."

He was relieved his side came through the match without major injuries.

Otago will have plenty of time to prepare for the Mitre 10 Cup  opener while Southland will reflect on a pre-season in which it did not bag a win and was struggling for combinations.
