Otago has been beaten heavily in its opening Mitre 10 Cup match of the season.

Bay of Plenty scored eight tries in a commanding 50-7 win over Otago in Tauranga today.

Otago was second best all day and never got anything going, down 26-0 at the break.

Otago will play Southland on Saturday in its first Ranfurly Shield defence.
