Otago's focus solely on BoP

Otago  will have one of its key forwards back and another one a chance to start as the blue and golds get ready for semifinal action on Friday night.

Otago will take on Bay of Plenty at Forsyth Barr Stadium in the first of the Mitre 10 Cup Championship semifinals.

The side qualified top of the ladder and will host the final if it wins on Friday night.

However, coach Cory Brown said the side was not getting ahead of itself and it was all about concentrating on the game on Friday night.

``We've still got to win our semifinal and we are not going to be looking too far ahead to be honest. It is all about Bay of Plenty and what we have to do to beat them,'' Brown said.

``They are a really good side. Have improved a lot. A very good ball-carrying team which looks after the ball really well. They have also got that little bit of X-factor and have an awesome lineout drive.''

Brown said his side had played very well in Friday night's win over Manawatu showing some great work on defence.

``I was very proud of the way we played. Just the way defensively we shut them down. In the first half, we were actually playing some really good rugby and we missed a couple of opportunities to score.''

The Otago scrum was powerful throughout the match and Brown said the forward pack had been working on it all season.

For this week, the side needed to work on the details about carrying the ball and looking after it as it built the phases.

It was important the team played well when under pressure and backed its skills.

The side was likely to get back No8 Paul Grant, who has missed the past two games because of a knee injury. He could have played at a push last week but it was decided to rest him.

Lock Tom Franklin has an appointment with the surgeon tomorrow on whether he can play on Friday night. He suffered a slight fracture in his leg in the match against Counties-Manukau on October 8 and was on crutches last week.

He will be keen to play as it would be his 50th game for Otago.

Winger Jack Wilson needs to get through a couple of contact sessions this week to make himself available but it would be unlikely for him to go straight back into the side having missed more than a month of play because of a shoulder injury.

Loose forward Lee Allan and outside back Tony Ensor are unlikely to play - both suffered concussions in the match against Manawatu.

Lock Josh Dickson, who appeared to pick up a concussion late on in the match against Manawatu, has been cleared and will be available for selection.

Otago beat Bay of Plenty in the regular season, winning 33-32 in Tauranga in September.

Bay of Plenty actually only won three games all season but qualified through scoring 11 bonus points. It tied on the same number of points (23) as Manawatu but went through as it beat Manawatu in the regular season.
