Rugby: NZ lose, but through to sevens quarters

New Zealand will face Wales in the quarterfinal of the South Africa sevens tournament after losing to traditional rivals Fiji 24-12 in their pool match overnight.

New Zealand responded to an early try by Fiji with two five-pointers from Belgium Tuatagaloa and Luke Masirewa to take a 12-7 halftime lead.

However, the Fijians hit back with three second-half tries to shut Gordon Tietjens' men out.

The two teams finished the pool stage equal on seven points after Fiji suffered a shock 21-19 loss to Scotland.

New Zealand beat Scotland 24-7 and England 14-7 in their other pool matches.
