Rugby: Spencer to feature in Spartans 10s

The Spartans 10s tournament will be back again next year with former All Black Carlos Spencer the star attraction.

The inaugural event took place at Miller Park, Green Island, earlier this year with 16 teams playing in a one-day tournament.

About $11,000 was raised at the tournament to go to the welfare of injured rugby players.

Organiser Shane Waldron said the response to the first event had been great and he decided to put on another event to help raise some more funds.

He hoped it would become a yearly event on the rugby schedule.

Clubs were also keen to get involved, he said, as it was a good opener for the club season.

When entries opened for next year's event, more than 20 clubs quickly indicated an interest in signing up but Waldron limited it to 16 teams.

Clubs from Invercargill, Central Southland, Central Otago and Dunedin had all entered the event, which will take place on February 13.

The game of 10s is played by five forwards and five backs, and is slightly different from sevens with more players on the field and a bit less space.

A Spartans team, made up of veteran players such as Kees Meeuws and Brendan Laney, took part in the tournament last year, and made an impression.

The team is back again and will include Spencer.

Spencer (40) played 35 tests for the All Blacks from 1995-2004 and made his first-class debut for Horowhenua while still at school.

He left to play in England in 2005 and has been coaching in South Africa in recent years.

Spencer is expected to be back living in Auckland by early next year. He will take a coaching clinic during the tournament weekend and a dinner will take place on the Friday before it opens.

Other players expected to line up in the Spartans team include former All Blacks Pita Alatini, Nathan Mauger and Meeuws, Scottish international Brendan Laney and former Highlander Romi Ropati.

The tournament took place in late January this year but Waldron said it had been pushed back a couple of weeks as the Wellington sevens and Auckland Nines events were on in the preceding weeks.

The tournament was won this year by an Otago Boys' High School side, made up of previous and current players, and the side has again entered.

A team made up of former and present King's High School pupils is also expected to line up.

Taieri has entered and should be a good chance to make an impression.
