Otago Boys' High School First XV proved too polished for Waitaki Boys' High School in the traditional interschool game at Littlebourne yesterday.

Despite the 64-0 scoreline, Otago Boys' coach Ryan Martin still sees value in the annual match.

''I do. I think traditional interschools are pretty special,'' Martin said.

''But I think the schools like Waitaki probably cycle more than us. They go up and down a bit more and they have to blood younger players some years, whereas one of the things we try to do here is to be really consistent and build depth.

''We've had a couple of blowouts in the last couple of years but we've also had tighter matches.''

Martin's side romped to a 31-0 lead after about 20 minutes and led 38-0 at halftime. The home side was too big, too strong and too slick.

It did the basics well and executed superbly in boggy conditions.

While Martin sees value in the fixture, Waitaki Boys' might have wished the bus was late.

The team has a crucial Otago premier school game against Otago Boys' 2nd XV this weekend but suffered season-ending injuries to first five-eighth Jake Matthews and second five-eighth Mason Kinzett as well as the disheartening loss.

In the other interschool clashes, Waitaki won the badminton 4-2 and the junior basketball 71-62.

But Otago Boys' was otherwise dominant, winning 9-2 overall.

It won the chess 8-0. The junior (9-1) and senior football (6-0) were also one-sided.

The hockey resulted in a 4-0 win to the home side. Otago Boys' emerged victorious 24-22 in colts rugby, while the squash and the smallbore shooting were also won by Otago Boys'.

The senior basketball went Otago Boys' way 82-69.
