Road users are warned to take care due to surface flooding, slips and rockfall after bad weather hit Central Otago, the West Coast and Canterbury.

While the rain has eased and MetService has lifted its weather warnings, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said area warnings remain in place this morning, a spokesman advised.

Contractors have been sent out to deal with rockfall reported on State Highway 8 between Lindis Pass and Lindis Valley in Central Otago.

Area warnings over surface flooding remain in place at the following West Coast locations:

  • SH7 between Reefton and Springs Junction (Rahu Saddle)
  • SH 6/Lower Buller Gorge between Inangahua and the intersection with State Highway 67/Buller Road
  • SH 6 between Makarora and Haast (including Haast Pass)
  • SH 6 between Haast and Hokitika

Temporary traffic lights and a 30km/h temporary speed limit reduction have also been in operation overnight on SH73, between Jacksons and Aickens, due to a slip yesterday blocking a lane of traffic.

In Christchurch, significant surface flooding has been reported this morning on SH 74/Anzac Drive, north of Wetlands Grove, and caution is being urged for those travelling on this route.

MetService said an "unsettled and cold showery" west-to-southwest flow was forecast and more wind warnings were possible, particularly for Southland and Otago, on Sunday.
