Balmacewen men put a stamp on their favouritism in Dunedin club tennis with a 6-0 win on Saturday, while nearest rival Eastern Harbour lost 2-4.
Balmacewen beat Mornington Roslyn Black, though it was pushed to three sets in both doubles, after four straight sets singles wins.
The competition leader has been able to field a consistent team, with Conrad Wong, Andrew Hilliard and Matt White to the fore, and this week James Bourne proved a valuable substitute with a convincing win at No 4.
Other teams have been more affected by students coming and going.
Eastern Harbour, without top man Campbell Higgins, who has returned to Tauranga, proved vulnerable.
Shaun Paringatai (Mornington Roslyn Blue) beat promoted Phil Mirfin 7-6, 6-2, showing improved fitness after earlier fading after a tough first set in previous matches.
Junior Ryan Eggers again showed his value with singles and doubles wins for Harbour, but Toby Lovell and Henry Benson-Pope found the step up difficult, although Benson-Pope pushed Joe Highton to 7-6 in the third set.
Balmacewen took all three against the Eastern Harbour/Country women.
Brittany Wong was too consistent for Hanna English, dropping only four games, and she was backed up by Pauline Hobbhahn.
Eastern Harbour had to wait for the doubles to beat St Clair 2-1 when Georgia Hume and Debbie Cartwright comfortably held off Sian English and Lauren Fowler 6-2, 6-1.
Earlier English survived four set points to beat Hume 7-6, 6-2 and Cartwright beat Fowler 6-2, 6-4.
Both singles were hard fought and seemed closer than the final scores but English, in particular, showed strong concentration and mental toughness.
