A class of year 8 pupils put their cooking skills to the test to help others.

Balmacewen Intermediate School pupils last week made more than 140 pancakes as a fundraiser for Chat Bus.

Chat Bus is a free counselling service for primary and intermediate pupils.

Teacher Leia Silby said the pupils were learning about how to have a positive impact on people.

They wanted to give money to the counselling service so other children could have access to it, Mrs Silby said.

‘‘They’re really tuned into how they can help other kids.’’

To make sure everything ran smoothly, the pupils split into groups to take care of different aspects such as marketing, logistics and finance.

They took orders from school pupils a few weeks ago, so they knew the quantity of ingredients they would need.

Pupils could also opt for toppings, such as chocolate sprinkles, banana, whipped cream and sauces.

Pancakes were sold for either $3 or $4, depending on the amount of toppings.

The deluxe option, which included everything, was ‘‘the most popular by a long shot’’.

All of this was put into action on Friday, when the class took over one of the ‘‘foods rooms’’ to whip up more than 140 pancakes.

Pupils formed production lines cooking, adding toppings and cleaning.

Afterwards, when all the orders were handed out, the class reflected on their experience.

They agreed it was fun and that they had learnt about time management, and the importance of communicating, staying focused and on task.

Mrs Silby estimated they had raised about $300.
