Tokomairiro High School head prefect Aaron Lindsay (17) says involvement in the school community has not only helped his time-management skills, but also with his timing - literally.

For the past year Aaron has been a drum tutor for year 7 to 10 pupils, and although he has been playing for three years he finds teaching has motivated him to practise more so he can better demonstrate skills.

"I'm not a very technical drummer but teaching has definitely helped with my playing. I've learned different [pupils] respond to different ways of teaching and ideas they understand and it has been good for my confidence."

Apart from musical talent Aaron enjoys drama and has had leading roles in three school productions.

Aaron also excels at both solo and team sports.

He is 1st XV rugby vice-captain, and enjoys the physical nature of playing open-side flanker.

He also competes in cross-country and athletics events, which require a "different kind of focus - mainly because it's just you out there and you have to find ways to pace yourself or dig deep to keep going."

Aaron also combines his love of music with visual arts and is designing a series of guitar graphics.

His NCEA art assessment display board will consist of several elaborate guitar designs, complete with strings.

Aaron says being a school leader, top sportsman and musician has helped with time-management skills.
