Growing up in rural Southland, Kevin Muir always had a passion for the agricultural industry.
The Federated Farmers Southland field officer spent most of his childhood in Tuatapere, Western Southland, and spent his spare time down at the duck pond.
Before becoming the Southland field officer, Mr Muir was in the navy before transferring to the army, eventually becoming an army instructor.
He has also owned a courier business and an insurance business along the way.
It was only a matter of time for Mr Muir before he went back to his farming roots.
As the man on the ground for Southland Federated Farmers, he deals with day-to-day farming practices.
Mr Muir's role, which he started eight months ago, involves liaising with farmers and agricultural businesses across the Southland region, as well as promoting Federated Farmers membership.
He enjoys the role because he is not stuck in an office all day and his week can be very different, depending what is going on, he said.
About 50% of Southland farmers were Federated Farmers members and Mr Muir said the benefits for the industry were huge.
Mr Muir said what had happened in the past 150 years of farming could not be changed tomorrow as Southland farmers now also faced many environmental issues.
He said there would be some interesting times ahead for farmers and he hoped he would help farmers transition easily through the changes.
The Southland man is not all about agriculture, as he has two children whom he follows around the region and up and down the country as they play their chosen sports.
He is also president of Squash City squash club in Invercargill and manager of the Southland under-16 rugby team.
