Century on farms call

'Tis the season to apply for the 2016 New Zealand Century Farm and Station Awards.

Applications close at the end of this month from families who have retained their farm for 100 years or more.

Since its inception in Lawrence in 2005, 337 families from throughout New Zealand have received awards.

Eligible families submitted narratives of their farm history, together with copies of related photographs and supporting documents which were then archived at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington.

A formal dinner in Lawrence each May honoured recipients, who were presented with a bronze plaque and certificate.

It was important the personal sacrifices, perseverance and commitment of previous generations were recognised, NZCFSA chairman Symon Howard said.

''Keeping any farm or station in a family from generation to generation through challenging times is an impressive achievement and deserves to be recognised.

''We've had 10 very successful years and attracted significant interest, mainly through word-of-mouth, but there are still plenty of long-standing farming families out there that deserve acknowledgment.''
