Lean Meats has been hitting the road in the South Island, meeting farmers and telling its story.

The Hastings-based company is a specialist heavy lamb producer and marketer, supplying lamb into the North American and European markets under the Atkins Ranch brand.

Its mobile boning trailer visited Kirwee, Gimmerburn, Kurow and Maheno this month, providing a live demonstration of how carcasses were cut into export cuts and presented as they would be into markets in Europe and North America.

It was an opportunity for farmers to meet Lean Meats staff and hear the company's story. Chief executive Richard Thorp was "blown away" with the response.

Mr Thorp was particularly proud of the company's Oamaru plant. Lean Meats bought Abco Meats (Oamaru) Ltd, which had gone into receivership, in 2006.

It was now profitable, generated an "enormous amount of money" for the local economy and provided many jobs.

There were significant plans for the Oamaru plant in the next 12 months and between about $1.6 million and $1.7 million was being invested in it over the next three months, which would generate further revenue, he said.
