The North Otago A and P Association's hoof and hook gift lamb competition attracted 10 entries.

The lambs were judged on the hoof at the North Otago A and P show on February 27.

Conrad Sim from Mt Dasher was placed first, Peter Dodd (Tapui) second and David Ruddenklau (Five Forks) third.

The lambs were also weighed, the weights ranging from 39kg to 52.5kg and averaging 46.47kg.

Last Monday, the lambs were processed at Lean Meats in Oamaru and then judged by Malcolm Thomas, of Lean Meats.

The criterion was that carcasses should be in the 21kg-23kg range, heavier than the desired weight of other meat-processing companies.

The lambs killed out at a 21.84kg carcass weight, with a yield of 47%.

Being worth $4.34 per kilogram, the lambs netted $94.78 per head.

First place on the hook went to Five Forks farmer Greg Ruddenklau, with a lamb with a yield of 53%, killing out at 23.2kg.

Conrad Sim's entry, which placed first on the hoof, was second on the hook.

At 26kg, it was the heaviest lamb and was worth $112.84 net.

An entry from Shirley Hayes was third, yielding 50.25%.
