Children's activities, with a country theme, is a focus of this year's event and include "horsey hopper" races, a mechanical bucking bull and a roping machine where children can try their lassoing skills, pony rides, a "balloon-ologist", face painting and colouring competition.
Pink is the theme of the rodeo for the third year. More than $14,000 has been raised so far for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and organisers hope to raise a further $10,000 this year.
All the cowboys and cowgirls will be wearing pink and spectactors were also encouraged to do likewise.
Caps and polo shirts will be on sale and there will also be a barrel racing sweepstake, proceeds if which will go to the NZBCF.
Gates open at 9am. Second division events start at 11am and open events in the afternoon. A "huge" number of entries had been received, organisers said.
Other southern rodeos include Outram on February 6 and Mataura on February 11. The national finals rodeo will be held in Lawrence on March 24.
