Cromwell orchardists the Webb family have marked a milestone by celebrating 100 years in the fruit industry this month.

It was 1914 when current owner Simon Webb's great-grandfather, John Robert Webb, and wife Florence first arrived at the 30.3ha (75-acre) property.

It was a small orchard and farm - about 4ha (10 acres) of the property was planted in fruit trees when they first arrived.

Now, 26.3ha (65 acres) is planted in apricots, nectarines, peaches and apples, as the fourth generation of the Webb family carry out day-to-day operations at the orchard.

There is not often a slow moment for the Webb family. Mr Webb said he enjoyed the fast-paced and busy lifestyle.

''The busier the better.

''You don't get time to stop and think about things. I really, really enjoy that busy patch. I sort of thrive on it.''

Growing up watching his father John and mother Ainsley run the orchard, Mr Webb knew he wanted to be an orchardist.

Earlier this month, the Webb family celebrated the 100-year milestone by opening a new roadside fruit stall that is also going to be used as a museum.

Mr Webb said by doubling the stall as a museum they could share with people some of their history while still selling fruit.

The orchard was opened for the public to visit on December 6 and the Webbs shared some of the orchard's history and their own family story with those who attended.

Mr Webb's mother Ainsley has put a book together about the 100-year history of Webb's Fruit.

The proceeds will go to the Otago Community Hospice.

Mr Webb credited the success of Webb's Fruit to a long line of hard-working people and great staff.

He said he did not know what was next for the orchard.

It was a ''watch this space scenario'', he said.
