Dunedin-based company Igtimi Ltd has reached the final of the Vodafone most innovative mobile technology award at this year's NZ Hi-Tech Awards.
Igtimi is an electronics and communications technology development house, its forte being specialised GPS telemetry, control and communication solutions.
Its systems have been used at the highest level of sailing regattas. The technology allows every move by the yacht and its sailors to be tracked, recorded, analysed and remedied bycoaches.
The system also recorded individual heart rates, tide, wind and even audio, all in real time, on mobile devices.
The technology is being used by the New Zealand Olympic yachting team and the Volvo Ocean Race series. It was also used in television coverage of the 2010 America's Cup.
Igtimi managing director Kylie Robinson was excited the company had been nationally recognised by the hi-tech community.
"We've worked hard for years at the cutting edge of global technology, so to have others recognise our innovation is very rewarding," she said.
This year's Hi-Tech Awards attracted a record number of entries from established and new businesses and 30 companies made the final, across 11 award categories.
The international judging line-up includes original Facebook investor Peter Thiel, the director of engineering for Google in New York, Craig Nevill-Manning, and Cisco senior vice-president Howard Charney. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on May 11.
