The Catlins Area School head pupil Heidi Geissler says on-stage skills translate to sport and leadership roles.

The unassuming 17-year-old says her successes may be related to a strong belief in hard work, practice, and keeping a level head.

Heidi says a recent highlight was being chosen as a Southern Area Schools netball representative and competing at the National Area Schools tournament in Whangarei.

For the past two years Heidi has had lead roles in South Otago Theatrical Society productions, including the perennial favourite The Sound of Music.

She tries to keep a calm head on the sports field and also applies this philosophy to the stage, and says she is usually able to use pre-performance nerves to her advantage, although admits it "depends on the audience".

As head pupil Heidi says she tries to be approachable, and is conscious of the need to be a positive role model for younger pupils.

She is also working to have the school council reinstated as a relevant school institution.

Achievements: Campbell Trust excellence in English prize (2007); Grade 5 Trinity piano (performance); Deputy House captain; school A netball team; Westpac Chamber Music group, School kapa haka group leader (2004-08); World Vision Scholarship recipient and school co-ordinator, Duke of Edinburgh (silver award).

Role models: "My parents - they are both hard workers and always very supportive. I also admire people who care and take an interest in others."

Hopes for the future: "I would like to be in musical productions, and am interested in aid work and travel. I would like to study English and theatre or nursing."
