A Mosgiel woman is "disgusted'' how her hometown has been portrayed in some parts of the media.

Shirley Connor, speaking in the public forum of the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board meeting at the Outram Rugby Football Club rooms last week, expressed her "disgust'' at how Mosgiel was portrayed in a radio advertisement for Trident Homes Dunedin.

"I was disgusted by their cheek of calling Mosgiel a township.''

Mosgiel was a town, rather than a township, she said.

"I think we have been sold short.''

A township was the home of "one man and one dog''.

She called Trident Homes Dunedin to express her concerns about the "derogatory'' advertisement.

Staff members did not share her concerns, she said.

She wanted the board to write to the house-building business and ask it to withdraw the advertisement.

Speaking at the meeting, Dunedin city councillor Mike Lord said Local Government New Zealand stated: "There are no longer towns or townships; all land is either part of a city, mostly urban, or district, mostly rural.''

Board chairwoman Sarah Davie-Nitis said Mosgiel was a suburb of Dunedin.

Board member Dean McAlwee said he believed the use of the word township was a marketing ploy to portray Mosgiel as "safe and small with good schools''.

Mrs Connor disagreed: "I don't buy that.''

She believed the word was used "because they're ignorant - downright ignorant - and it annoys me they are allowed to put an advert on''.

Mrs Davie-Nitis thanked Mrs Connor for sharing her view at the meeting.

"We will take your concerns on board.''

Speaking to the Taieri Times the day after the meeting, Mrs Davie-Nitis said the board would not be taking any further action.

Trident Homes Dunedin owner James Crook said he believed the issue was "minor'' and did not warrant being raised.

Station? Sounds like it's above yours. She lives there.

Respect to you Mrs Connor keep up the good work and keep going the DCC needs people such as yourself to keep them honest make them accountable and be the squeaky wheel that needs the oil, unfortunately you may find Dunedin is turning into a Village under Cull.
