The Dunedin City Council is to trial three options to make Tomahawk Rd safer.

Otago Peninsula Community Board members discussed the options at its meeting earlier this month.

In the meeting's agenda, it was stated the three options were:

• Speed humps: Install rubber speed humps at even spacing along the road to achieve vehicle speeds of 30-40kmh.

• Chicane: Install four chicanes.

• Chicane cycleways: Install four chicanes and paint cycle lanes.

For both chicane options, build-outs would be trialled first as bollards.

Board chairman Paul Pope said speeding vehicles had been an issue for Tomahawk residents for a while.

"It's quite a fast stretch of road.''

Board member Lox Kellas said the trial was a great idea from a safety point of view.

Council Transport group manager Richard Saunders told The Star the council received requests from residents and the community board for safety improvements and "traffic calming measures''.

"Their main concerns are around speeding vehicles on the road.''

People using the Ocean Grove sports ground and playground were at risk of serious injury or death if a vehicle versus a pedestrian crash happened, he said.

The time each option was trialled for would be determined by feedback from the community board, residents, speed counts and crash data.

"If there is a link between the implementation of safety improvements and lowered speeds and the reduction in crashes, we will plan work on the road and make the trial permanent.''

He anticipated the council would trial on option over summer.

"The DCC will make a decision based on feedback and data from the road. Timeframes will depend on other priorities around the city.''
